Hello everyone,

Here are your announcements for this week.

Band Polos

All new Marching Spartans will need to purchase a band polo. The shirts were ordered off the shirt size provided in the registration form. The cost will be $28 and shirts will be handed out Monday prior to the parade.

Fitness Homework

As our rookies have found out this week and our veterans were cruelly reminded, marching band is an athletic activity. While marching band meets only twice a week, it is strongly recommended that students train on their own for a third day. Each week, there will be fitness homework for students. It is also crucial for students who may miss any rehearsal during the summer. While there is no way to verify that students actually do this, students who elect to not do the fitness homework usually start struggling to keep up in rehearsals. Here is this week’s assignment (repeat the number of times you miss rehearsal this week):

C25K – (31 minutes)

Brisk walk 5 Minutes Alternate jogging 1.5 minutes and walking 2 minutes 6 total times

Cool down walk 5 minutes

Core

Plank for 45 seconds, 1 minute rest, plank for 45 seconds

Bridge for 45 seconds, 1 minute rest, bridge for 45 seconds

Bicycle crunches 3 sets of 5

Hopedale 4th of July Parade

Our first performance of the year is this Monday in Hopedale for the 4th of July Parade. Students should wear their band polos and khaki shorts or capris. Students who are riding the bus have a call time of 8:45 AM to load the trailer at school. We will leave school at 9:00 AM. Students meeting us at the parade should meet us at the water tower in Hopedale at 9:15 AM. The parade will begin at 10:00 AM and we should be finished around 10:30 AM at the elementary school/park by the car show. We should arrive back to OHS around 11:00 AM. See below for our bus policy for all summer parades/performances.

Bus Policy

Students are expected to ride the bus to and from parade performances with the following exceptions: The parade is in their hometown. The student’s house is closer to the parade town than the school. A parent notifies the director at least 48 hours in advance that they will be dropping off and picking up their student at the parade.

Any student who rides the bus to the performance is to ride it back to school. However, these students may be signed out by a parent/guardian after the band has completed their performance. To help ensure the band’s schedule remains on time and we arrive back at school at the time announced in the weekly email, we ask that you sign your student out within 15 minutes of the band finishing their portion of the parade. Please note that this means the band’s performance and not the entire parade itself. After the 15 minutes and the trailer is loaded, we will have everyone get back on the bus so we can head back to school.

Students who do not ride the bus are not expected to be signed out. It is expected that they find their parents/cars on their own after the parade.

Binders

Students should bring a three ring binder (at least 1 inch) to rehearsal on Thursday, July 7. We will be handing out the drill for the show, learning how to read drill, and putting the first set of the show on the field. Some students prefer to have plastic inserts to help protect their drill in case of bad weather. Also, students are encouraged to bring some form of string/yarn that they can attach to their binder so they can wear it while on the field.

Marching Band Music

All of the music for marching band can be found here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6boiyMOjLJ7fjJOblh3NVhMM1dFdldQOXJLSzNOSGNiQktYb1ZHUVRhZ25MSktFd3E3amM&usp=sharing. Students should expect to be able to play through the music on Thursday, June 23. Part assignments and cuts to the show music are available here as well. The parade tune, “God Bless America”, should be memorized by Tuesday, June 28. Hard copies of this music will be available at Rookie Camp and the veterans rehearsal.

Parent Help

We need parent help! Find out how you can help by visiting here: http://kylebrubaker.wix.com/olympia-music#!parent-help/cjqq. Each that you can click on as a link will take you to a sign up for that job.

*We could use two parents to help with water at the Hopedale 4th of July Parade!*
